This was not my first time recording at the historic and stunningly beautiful Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, BC and I knew to expect a very difficult time getting in with my gear - as usual. I was not disappointed. I had quite the ordeal getting in through several layers of security and explaining what was going on to the house manager. Thankfully, once we got it all cleared up, I was only questioned about 4 more times. Unfortunately, for reasons that weren't clear, they only opened up the theatre doors about 5 minutes before the opening band, Everest hit the stage. This left me setting up in the dark which was not the ideal situation. Nevertheless, I managed to get all the gear in place in my excellent location slightly ROC over the balcony.
First thing I immediately noticed that couldn't be missed was how loud the show was. I'm not sure why they decided to go for so much volume - I'm thinking the tech crew may have possibly overestimated the venue size - after all, they are certainly used to larger venues than this one. I remember thinking how I hope the sound comes out better on tape than what I was actually hearing (I always use professional fitted musician earplugs with -25dB filters) and I'm happy to say I think it did.
The band themselves were in fine form. Jim was all over the place with his usual wonderful antics and amazing knee slides - voice, guitar licks and everything in fine form. Patrick and Tom pounded out the rhythm at times overwhelming and other times delicate and understated while Carl & Bo laid down the atmosphere. The band was tight and performed a great set that lasted just under 2 1/2 hours. No big surprises; just a solid show performed by amazing musicians on top of their game.

No compression was used in the post-processing of this recording to preserve it's dynamic range, listenability and authenticity.
This recording will naturally sound much better cranked up loud with quality headphones!
Peace & enjoy,
